With yesterday’s news that the Super6 will not be continuing into the 2013 season, we felt it important that we spell out our plans for the 2013 season for our customers. This post will do just that and also set out our strategy for the next couple of years.
Over the next two years, Shoreline will be cutting the number of events that we do in the UK in favour of increasing the number of events that we do in overseas markets. Whilst we’ll not be completely withdrawing from the UK, our aim is to get down to just two UK events over the next two seasons. The two events that we will run, will be in the mould of TCUK and Staargate (i.e. not the cheapest – but very high quality).
Why the phased reduction in involvement in the UK market?
We predict that after several years of boom, the scenario side of paintball in the UK is hurtling towards a period of inevitable decline. The reason for this is very simple and is EXACTLY the same reason why tournament in other countries is flourishing whilst in the UK it is at rock bottom. Tournament was fragmented and destroyed by a small, but nasty, group of people who love to play politics. Now, the very same is happening in scenario and astonishingly, often involves some of the very same people who have already done their best to kill tournament.
In recent times we’ve seen real scenario projects like Support for Soldiers, Guerrilla Paintball and Super6 destroyed by others for commercial gain. That will not be the end of it. When the owner of a paintball company and his wife are getting arrested for false allegations made to the police by a rival, you know that there is something rotten at the heart of the UK game. Having destroyed tournament in this country, the same is already happening with scenario.
As a company, we’ve absolutely no desire to be involved and no stomach to get dragged into the nasty dogfights. Working at Shoreline is as much as lifestyle choice as it is a career and dealing with negativity in the UK market is tiresome and tedious. If the UK Scenario and Big Game market is going to be an endless trench warfare involving really nasty and underhand tactics, we would rather withdraw and leave it to those who behave in that way whilst we scoot over to Europe and enjoy ourselves doing what we do over there instead and drinking Pepsi Max.
All we want to do is put on great events for our customers, earn a living and have a hoot whilst doing it. We work hard, we party hard and the line between customers and friends is often blurred – and we love that. We don’t want that sense of fun crushed out of our company by the politics in the UK game.
So, by the 2014 season, we’ll have phased down to about two events in the UK but will have added events in France, Poland and Germany to our portfolio and we will be increasing the number of Shoreline Road Trips that we run to major European events for UK players.
So as one door closes, another massive aircraft hanger of exciting times opens up.
So what’s the plan for 2013?
The plan for 2013 is simple. We’ll keep our major flagship UK events and also a couple of funky ones. We’ll add a Shoreline Euro Big Game in France to our portfolio and we’ll run Road Trips to major European events.
Feb – Armo-Geddon VII @ YPC
April – Wedding Day @ Holmbush
June – Shoreline Euro Big Game @ The Fort, France
June – Shoreline Road Trip to France
July – Tippmann Challenge UK @ Sennybridge
September – Staargate
September – Shoreline Road Trip to Veckring
Feb – Armo-Geddon VII
Shoreline traditionally opens the UK Scenario season and next year will be no different. Armo-Geddon is where it all started for us as a company and was the first event Shoreline ever ran and we’re delighted to see it back on the schedule next year after Armo-Geddon VI was such a massive success last year.
The event will return to YPC and we’ll also see the return of youngsters as Generals who will once again compete to win the awesome Shoreline Armo-Geddon Sword trophy.
April – Wedding Day
If you want to know how much the Shoreline team live and love paintball – check this out!!!
Two of the Shoreline staff (Rob and Kayleigh) are getting married in real life and they have agreed to turn the entire REAL wedding into a paintball game!!
Whilst people have been married at paintball events before, nobody to our knowledge anywhere in the world have had their ACTUAL wedding as a paintball game. So expect stag and hen nights the night before, expect to be battling over the church, expect a real vicar to conduct a real wedding in the middle of a real paintball game!!!
Insanity!!
Shoreline previously run a game called Wedding Day at Prozone a couple of years ago and that event was voted the UK Game of the Year 2010………so we have form!
Our current thinking is to make this event very very very cheap to attend. We always try to run at least one very low cost event each year to help out those players who are on a budget and the general fun feel of Wedding Day would seem to fit the bill.
Wedding Day will be the UK’s most outrageous paintball game yet. A real wedding, in a wedding day themed scenario game.
June – Shoreline Euro Big Game @ The Fort, France
We’ll not mess about, The Fort is the best paintball site we have ever seen……anywhere in the world. It is absolutely, totally and utterly astonishing!!
A Napoleonic fort, with 4 levels, 5.5km’s of internal tunnels, firing points, turrets, bunkers, blast rooms etc all surrounded by 11 km’s of concrete trenches and over 100 bunkers in a 100 acre woodland set in breathtakingly beautiful French countryside.
Make no bones about it, after testing the water with our last event in France in 2011, this event will be our big entrance into the European Big Game market and we’ll be throwing EVERYTHING that we have at this event. The site is jaw dropping, genuinely bite your hand amazing, there will be night games played inside the fort, there will be epic pyro and this will be one of the major European events of 2013.
June – Shoreline Road Trip to Shoreline Euro Big Game @ The Fort, France
Anyone who has been on a Shoreline Road Trip to play paintball abroad will testify that it is often a life changing experience. 5 years of trips to Oklahoma D-Day, trips to Belgium, Croatia, France and Russia have all been legendary in their own right. Our last trip to Veckring cost the travellers three hundred odd quid which included event tickets, paint, accommodation travelling etc – so not much more than attending a UK game.
So, if you and your team have ever harboured ambitions of representing your country at a major overseas event, a Shoreline Road Trip is for you. It’ll not break the bank and you are guaranteed to come home with some new mates for life.
We’ll be opening tickets for our trips in the coming months and will create a monthly payment plan so that travellers can pay a small amount each month (less than a mobile phone bill) to pay for their epic road trip to an overseas game.
July – Tippmann Challenge UK @ Sennybridge
No words necessary. Assuming we don’t kill anyone this year, we are really pleased to team up with our partner Tippmann for a 4th year in what will once again be the UK’s flagship Scenario Big Game.
September – Staargate @ Wakefield – STC
Assuming Mr Bull will have us back for a 6th year. Again, no words necessary to describe Staargate.
September – Shoreline Road Trip to Veckring, France
For those unable to make the Road Trip in June, we’ll run another trip to the Veckring Big Game in France. This trip will incorporate a historical tour of part of the Maginot line as well as the epic French big game. Again, it’ll not cost the earth and is sure to be as epic as every other trip we’ve run.
2014
2014 will see us drop a couple of UK games and add events in Germany and Poland. Leaving us with two flagship UK events (hopefully Sennybridge and Staargate) and events in France, Germany and Poland. We’ll likely run some Road Trips in 2014 to major Euro events as well.
Conclusion
We are really excited about the 2013 season. Whilst there maybe less events with no Guerrilla and no Super6, there will be plenty of decent games for players to attend. There will also never be a better time to stretch your wings and add playing overseas to your paintball CV.
Shoreline will also be supporting other real scenario events run by teams like Going Postal, PUPS, Scottish Warriors and Task Force Delta as well as supporting other professionally run 2nd generation scenario events from promoters like YPC and Campaign.
Our advice to players and teams would be to pick your games next year. Cherry pick the games that look compelling and if that means less events overall, why not a trip to one of the overseas events to your calendar instead? The scenario scene will undergo a period of flux over the next couple of years, but there will be some outstanding events still being held on these shores and overseas events have never been closer, cheaper and easier to attend for a completely new paintball experience.
But one thing is critical:……………….where ever you play paintball………..smile!
It’s just cops and robbers for grown ups after all.
